Volunteers are our heartbeat.
ViM was founded by volunteers—and continues to thrive because of their expertise and generosity.
Our volunteers come from many different backgrounds, at many stages of their careers. They are retired professionals; active clinicians working in local practices; students in medical, dental, or nursing school; and other health care professionals interested in gaining experience in the whole-person model of care or giving back to their communities. They create an atmosphere of hope, joy, and compassion inside our care centers.
Below, you’ll learn what it’s like to volunteer at ViM, get to know some of our providers, find out how to become a volunteer, and more!
The Volunteer Experience
To put it simply: VIM volunteers save lives. Our patients are grateful and gracious. They come to VIM from the most extreme circumstances, and our volunteers revive their health—and their hope.
Rewarding
Our volunteers help VIM develop a better kind of health care. From our daily huddle to our social determinants of health program, VIM Berkshires’ whole-person model is based on the latest research in public health care. And, because we’re not limited by insurance requirements and stipulations, we’re able to deliver the most straightforward, meaningful care to our patients.
Innovative
If we do say so ourselves, VIM is a great place to volunteer. Everyone on staff is mission-driven, working towards a common goal, and you’ll meet people who share your interests. Joining VIM is joining a community. We stand together to serve patients and solve problems. We work together, cry together, celebrate together.
Communal
Our dedicated staff supports volunteers to make sure their time and energy are used efficiently for the greatest impact. We do the patient scheduling. Malpractice is covered. Just show up.

FAQs
How do I apply?
Visit our Become a Volunteer page to learn more about our open volunteer opportunities and to apply! If you have any questions, reach out to our volunteer coordinator, Eleanore Velez, at evelez@vimberkshires.org or 413-528-4014.
Will I receive any training or support?
Yes! Volunteers participate in a thorough orientation to familiarize them with our facilities and client care procedures. Ongoing support is be provided by our experienced staff. (We also throw excellent volunteer parties.)
Who are your patients?
Our patients are in serious need. They’ve often come from extreme situations including domestic violence and human trafficking. They are mothers who have walked thousands of miles with their infants and children, and fathers working long hours and dangerous jobs, separated from their families. Our volunteers make a direct, transformational impact on people’s lives.
Which clinical volunteer positions are open?
We are seeking doctors, nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, behavioral health therapists, optometrists, massage therapists, acupuncturists, nutritionists, physical therapists, and community health workers.
What is the time commitment?
Once a week or once a month—every visit makes a difference. ViM works closely with our volunteers to create a schedule that is flexible and sustainable.
I am not a clinician or medical professional. Can I still volunteer?
Yes! Our nonclinical volunteers include bilingual interpreters who work with clinicians and staff to make sure every patient can be treated in their native language, bilingual receptionists who welcome patients and help schedule appointments, and drivers help get our patients to and from appointments. Others help with fundraising, grant-writing, and office management.
Can I volunteer virtually?
Yes! Many of our volunteer clinicians provide care through our robust telehealth program. Medical interpreters can also work by phone and video call.
