Mary Canale, MSN, APRN Joins VIM as Clinical Care Coordinator

Mary Canale has dedicated her nursing career to serving the most under-served populations.

“My goal has always been to help people get the care they need, without judgment.  I’ve done mostly outpatient care and have treated all patients the same. I want to continue that mission and vision at VIM Berkshires. I’m very happy with this new opportunity.”

Mary started her career in nursing as a Clinic Coordinator in Berkeley, California, proving health services and case management for poor and indigent clients.

“Working with the very poor and homeless sometimes meant going out to street corners to find my patients and bringing them in for follow-up treatments. It was hard work but very rewarding.”

Mary received her Bachelors degree in nursing from New York University in 1997. She went home to the West Coast and worked in Berkeley and San Francisco from 1998 to 2002.  But the Big Apple was calling…she moved back to New York City in 2002 to work at Lenox Hill Community Medical Group, an acute care clinic.

“I had fallen in love with New York as a student and wanted to live there.  I’ve been in New York and Connecticut for the past several years and I now consider myself an East Coast person.”

Since 2007, Mary has lived and worked in Connecticut.  She earned her advanced degree as a nurse practitioner from Quinnipiac University in 2012.

“Most recently, I’ve worked at Noble Horizons in Salisbury as a Nurse Supervisor,” Mary said.  “I had never worked with the elderly in long-term care before and I learned a lot.”

Mary says she’s been impressed with the staff and volunteers at VIM Berkshires on her visits to the Clinic and looks forward to making a difference for the patients and her colleagues.  Mary triages and coordinates VIM medical care and case management services.  She is also providing direct patient care as a Nurse Practitioner.

“We’re thrilled to have Mary join us,” said Board of Trustees Chairman Arthur Peisner. “She brings excellent training and experience and a passion for our mission.”
