On June 26th, 2013, Berkshire United Way presented the Edward J. Dery Jr. Memorial Award for lifetime achievement in community giving and caring  to Marion Simon. The following are excerpts from her award, presented to her by 2005 recipient Susan Lombard.

To date, this award has only been given four times in the Berkshires – to Robert Wells, Nicholas Boraski, Susan Lombard, and most recently, to Nancy and Jane Fitzpatrick in 2009.

Marion Simon’s induction into this group makes her the fifth person to receive this prestigious award. She is one of the founders of Volunteers in Medicine Berkshires and currently sits on the Board of Trustees.  Until 2010 she served on the boards of Berkshire United Way and Barrington Stage Company.

Her current work with Berkshire United Way includes serving on the Resource Development, Long Range Planning, Community Investment Oversight, Venture Grant and Planned Giving Committees.  She also has worked to keep the Haas Challenge alive, which helps prospective and current leadership donors reach higher levels of giving.

She is the President of the Elephant Rock Foundation and was instrumental in founding the Child Care Council in Rochester, NY, serving as their first board chair. She has taught history and social studies at the junior/senior high school level.

Her work has been substantial and her generosity to the Berkshires has been remarkable. She is a shining example of what the Ed Dery Award is all about, continuing his exemplary legacy.
