Carol Reife, MD
Carol Reife, MD, Co-Medical Director of VIM Berkshires, has been spending vacation time in the Berkshires since she was a child. Since she loves the area, she was thrilled when she and her husband, neurologist Ross Reife, MD, purchased their own vacation home in Otis in 2006. A few years later, she learned about the work of VIM Berkshires.
“When a friend told me about VIM, I reached out to Matt Mandel and got a tour of the clinic. I was hooked! VIM Berkshires is a dream place for a primary physician to practice,” says Dr. Riefe.
Carol Reife has retired and plans to live in Otis most of the year. But she and her husband still own a home in the Philadelphia area where they both spent most of their working life, so she commutes to the Berkshires twice a month. Dr. Reife sees patients in a clinical role once a month, but she also spends a lot of time overseeing medical care in the clinic from a distance.
“I’m in touch almost daily with both Dr. Mandel and Clinical Care Coordinator Mary Canale, by both phone and email,” says Dr. Reife. “I get involved with making clinical decisions, interpreting test results and ensuring that medical guidelines are followed.”
Dr. Reife is a graduate of St. Louis University Medical School. She trained at Roger Williams General Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island and Montefiore Medical Center, the academic medical center and University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She worked as Medical Director of Outpatient Care at Montefiore in the Bronx and then at Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia for 20 years.
“I enjoy educating patients about healthy lifestyles,” says Dr. Reife. “VIM is an amazing place to do that, to care for people who need low cost or free health care and offer them the full spectrum of services.”
